CARDIFF HOOKER Jonathan Humphreys was sacked as Wales captain yesterday, making way for club teammate Gwyn Jones to head a 30-man squad to tour North America in July.

National coach Kevin Bowring said the leadership duties had had a detrimental effect on Humphreys's individual performances and he had promoted the 24-year-old flanker with the 1999 World Cup in mind.
