On July 15th 1923, Bobby Jones won his first US Open, beating Bobby Cruickshank by 76 to 78 in an 18-hole play-off for the title at the Inwood CC in New York. About 10,000 fans watched battle neck and neck until the 425-yard 18th, where Jones struck the decisive blow. Having driven into rough, he proceeded to hit a glorious second shot of 195 yards, over water to within eight feet of the pin.

Jones later recalled: "I saw the ball on the green near the pin. Next thing I knew, somebody was propping me up by the arm."
