Chris Small reached the quarter-finals of the £350,000 snooker Grand Prix at Bournemouth yesterday when he beat London left-hander Alfie Burden 5-2. The 24-year-old former bank clerk from Edinburgh dropped the opening two frames against Burden But he overcame a hesitant start to win five frames without reply.

Earlier, countryman John Higgins crushed Mark King 5-0.
