Panzanini, who led an Italian one two in a giant slalom, underwent special treatment at a clinic in the summer after doctors told her that recurring back problems were due to her being overweight.

The 24 year old produced the quickest second run to improve on a first leg fifth place for a winning aggregate time of two minutes 34.74.

First run leader Deborah Compagnoni, the Olympic and world champion, shared second place with Austria's Anita Wachter in 2:34.82.

Slovenian Urska Hrovat disappointed home crowds by finishing fourth in 2 minutes 35.23.

Sweden's Pernilla Wiberg retained the lead in the overall World Cup standings with 618 points despite finishing a poor 25th.
