Newcastle last night staged a transfer coup when they captured the signature of England under-21 striker Carl Cort for £7 million.
The 22-year-old Wimbledon striker flew into Tyneside early yesterday to meet chairman Freddy Shepherd and chief executive David Stonehouse, and after a rigorous medical, agreed a five-year deal.
"The chairman and chief executive have impressed me with their ambitious plans for the club and I am delighted at the prospect of playing for Bobby Robson." he said.
Newcastle have also tabled a bid of $12.6 million for 22-year-old Belgian international striker Emile Mpenza and Tottenham have put in an even higher bid but the young prospect has stated his desire to play in France.
Derby have completed the signing of Manchester United left-back Danny Higginbotham for £2 million.
The 21-year-old has arrived at Pride Park on a four-year deal and will replace former England defender Tony Dorigo.
Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has joined the chase for Everton striker Nick Barmby and could snatch the player from under the nose of arch-rivals Liverpool.
Everton boss Walter Smith revealed that Barmby, 26, has openly expressed his desire for a move to his boyhood idols Liverpool.
