York will take the wraps off its new £10 million Tattersall's grandstand, to be named the Knavesmire Stand - at the opening day of its Dante fixture on Tuesday, May 12th.

Shepherd Construction, the main contractor for the new stand development, will mark the day - the first of York's 1996 programme - by sponsoring the £20,000 Shepherd Trophy, a rated stakes over 10 furlongs for three-year-olds.

John Smith, manager and clerk of the course at York, said: "The Knavesmire Stand is an exciting project and we are convinced that the new facilities will set a new standard for British racegoing.

"We are delighted to see Shepherd emphasise their commitment to York racecourse with this prestigious event."
