The Australians have preempted England by announcing their intention to run their Test and one-day squads as separate entities with different captains. England's selectors will almost certainly follow suit by announcing a captain who they hope will take the side to Sharjah, Pakistan, for a one-day quadrangular tournament in December, take over the reins for the limited-overs series at the end of the Caribbean tour, and eventually lead the side into the 1999 World Cup.
