MOTOR SPORT:THE CARLOW-Waterford partnership of Stephen Murphy and Mickey Joe Morrissey in a Subaru WRC leads off the two-day West Cork Rally from tomorrow's Clonakilty start.

This event has proven hugely popular since its inception in 1977. And this year is no exception; there were 221 applications for one of the 151 starting places, a strong entry in the historic-car section and 26 juniors.

Murphy won this event on his only appearance back in 2000 and though he is favoured for a second victory, the likes of Donie O'Sullivan in his Subaru, Liam McCarthy in his Toyota Corolla WRC and the English drivers John Dalton and Phil Collins cannot be discounted.

Tomorrow's stages are at Rossmore, Ballinascarthy, Sams Cross and Ardfield and Sunday's are at Clogagh, Inchybridge, Dunworley and Clonakilty.
