THE Irish men's and women's squash teams enjoyed starkly different fortunes on the opening day of the European Championships in Amsterdam yesterday. The men ran out easy winners against Portugal to stay on course for promotion, but the women suffered two very heavy defeats.

Derek Ryan helped his side to a 4-0 victory in which the Portuguese failed to pick up even a game.
