Having avoided defeat against world under-21 champions Holland and European title holders Germany last week in Hanover, Ireland's women's hockey juniors were brought down to earth yesterday in Cardiff when they could only manage a 2-2 draw against Wales in the opening game of the four-nations tournament. The Irish girls, who are using the weekend as the final part of their build up to next month's European finals in Belfast, fell behind in the 20th minute but Anya Bowers levelled before the interval. Dawn Kelly added a second goal within 60 seconds but Wales equalised with 11 minutes remaining.
