A THOROUGH investigation will be held into the circumstances surrounding the death of jockey Richard Davis. The Jockey Club announced yesterday that four top level officials would be discussing all the factors that led to the tragedy.

The investigation committee will be chaired by Robert Waley Cohen, a racecourse steward and includes Tony Goodhew, the director of racecourse services, Malcolm Wallace, the director of regulation, and Dr Michael Turner, chief medical adviser.

David Pipe, the Jockey Club's director of public affairs, said: "They haven't set any time limit on this investigation. They simply want to look at all the relevant factors."

Some have suggested that the committee might consider imposing a minimum standard of horse in an attempt to reduce the risk of accidents.

The jockey died after sustaining internal injuries when Mr Sox fell in the first race at last Friday's jumps meeting at Southwell. An inquest into Davis's death will be opened and adjourned in Newark today.
