Michael Hoey, Ireland's last hope in the British Amateur Championship at Hoylake, just failed to make the quarter-finals over the Royal Liverpool course yesterday.

The Shandon Park man made it through the third round in the morning with a huge 7 and 6 win over Wales' Jamie Donaldson.

But the 20-year-old Irish international found things very different when he faced German Christian Reimbold in the fourth round in the afternoon. It was a nip and tuck affair, and the pair were level coming off the 18th green. But Hoey could only bogey the first extra hole.
