A superb individual performance by full forward Ger Heavin - he scored 2-7 - helped Moate All Whites avenge last year's defeat by Coralstown-Kinnegad in this lively Westmeath senior football final at Cusack Park, Mullingar yesterday.

In only the third minute, Heavin ghosted in behind the Coralstown defence to drive an unstoppable shot to the net.

Wind assisted Coralstown, thanks to the accuracy of freetaker John Fleming, and Darren Fox, did equalise by the 12th minute, but a determined and speedy Moate came back to lead at the break by 1-5 to 0-6.

The real turning point of the match came in the 50th minute when an excellent move involving Kevin Gillivan ended with an alert Heavin palming the ball to the net from close range. Coralstown had some consolation with a John Fleming goal from a penalty in injury time.
