Former professional Paddy Gribben made a fairytale return to amateur golf yesterday when he swept into the first round lead in the European Amateur Individual Golf championship in Bordeaux.

The 28-year old plus-three handicapper from Warrenpoint who has only just been reinstated as an amateur, fired a brilliant four-under-par 67 over the superb Golf du Medoc course to lead the field by a stroke.
