Marist Athlone 1-8 Patrician Newbridge 0-7Marist Athlone progressed to the next round thanks largely to a fine second-half performance at Newbridge yesterday.

They took an early lead with points from Kevin Touhy and Brendan Kelly but Patrician Newbridge scored three times without reply to seize the initiative.

The sides were tied on 0-3 apiece after Kelly landed the last score of the half.

There was little between the sides in the second half until Conor Cosgrove converted a penalty in the third quarter.

Patrician Newbridge rallied bravely towards the end of the game but the goal they needed never materialised and the visitors held out for a merited win.

SCORERS: Marist Athlone: C Cosgrove 1-3, 1 pen 2 frees, B Kelly 0-3, K Tuohy, D Costello 0-1 each. Patrician Newbridge: A Smith 0-2, 1 free, M Colleton, R Confrey, G White, J Geraghty, G Scully 0-1 each.
