PAUL CARBERRY was last evening in hospital in Cheltenham with a suspected punctured lung after a bad fall in yesterday’s opening race.

The former champion jockey, who was due to ride Star De Mohaison in today’s Gold Cup, also fractured a rib in an incident during the Jewson Novices Handicap Chase.

Jockey Alan Crowe was unseated from Back On Board in the race and Carberry’s mount Jaamid was brought down by the prone jockey. As Jaamid rolled he kicked Carberry in the chest.

The Irishman was treated at the track before being taken by ambulance to Cheltenham General Hospital. Timmy Murphy will ride Star De Mohaison in the Gold Cup.
