Brady given clean bill of health

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND assistant manager Liam Brady has been discharged from hospital and will return to work today.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND assistant manager Liam Brady has been discharged from hospital and will return to work today.

The 52-year-old was taken to Dublin's Beaumont Hospital early Thursday morning after complaining of back and chest pains and was detained overnight for tests.

However, the Football Association of Ireland yesterday confirmed he had been released and will be on duty at the Premier League clash between Tottenham and Sunderland at White Hart Lane along with Giovanni Trapattoni's other lieutenant, Marco Tardelli.

An FAI statement said: "Republic of Ireland assistant team manager Liam Brady has been discharged from Beaumont hospital this afternoon following completion of his medical examinations.

"He has been given a clean bill of health and has told us he will return to work tomorrow, when he will travel to London to be at the Tottenham v Sunderland match with Marco Tardelli."

Meanwhile, Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz has committed himself to the club by signing a new four-year deal.

The Paraguay international had been the subject of a bid from Manchester City earlier this summer as well as reported interest from several other clubs. However, the 27-year-old has opted to pen a contract extension to tie him to Ewood Park until 2012.

West Brom yesterday completed the signing of Borja Valero from Real Mallorca for a club record €5.8 million.

The 23-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year contract after passing a medical, the club's official website said. Spaniard Valero is the club's ninth signing of the summer.

Kevin Keegan will hold a summit meeting with Newcastle United's board on Wednesday to discuss proposed contract extensions for Michael Owen, James Milner and Steve Harper. The manager admitted he had not so far been fully involved in the negotiations.

Owen and Harper's current deals expire next summer, while Milner remains tied to a long-term agreement but is paid substantially less than many players in Newcastle's squad and wants parity with Steven Taylor, who recently renegotiated his contract.

"There's been no progress on James Milner's situation yet but we're having a meeting on Wednesday about a lot of things and it will be discussed," said Keegan yesterday. "I would have thought we'll also discuss Michael and Stevie Harper too. But I can't see any reason why we can't secure all three players."

Under the club's new continental management structure the former England coach has found himself divorced from contract and transfer negotiations and admitted he is a little "out of the loop" on certain matters.

Mike Ashley, Newcastle's owner, is expected to attend Wednesday's meeting along with Dennis Wise, the club's executive director, Tony Jimenez and Derek Llambias.
