Ireland's women beat Portugal 5-0 to complete a hat-trick of victories in the qualifying round of the Uber Cup badminton tournament in Norway yesterday. Another fine performance from a confident Sonya McGinn saw her lose just four points in the first game of her singles win against Filipa Lamy.

Elaine Kiely was forced to work for her success by Anna Ferreira before coming through 11-6, 11-8. Paired with McGinn in the first of the doubles, she came up with another straight sets victory despite a fight-back from the Portuguese.

After losing the first game 15-6, Ferreira and Lamy clawed their way back from 8-14 to force a tie break. "We were a bit careless" said McGinn after winning 15-6 18-16.

Claire Henderson lost the first game against Helena Berimau before battling to a 7-11 12-11 11-7 victory. Now the Irish squad play Sweden.
