Sir, – Although a centenary statue to Brian O’Nolan and his many literary personae might be a welcome but distant prospect in his adopted city (An Irishman’s Diary, September 22nd, and Letters, September 28th), your readers may be interested to know that Brian, Flann and Myles are to be commemorated by a new Ulster History Circle blue plaque.
The plaque replaces a previous one on the writer’s birthplace at Bowling Green, Strabane, Co Tyrone, and will be unveiled tomorrow by Kevin O’Nolan, nephew of Brian.
Financed by Strabane District Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and costing much less than a statue might, the plaque will be a permanent tribute in his native town to an exceptional Irish writer. – Yours, etc,
