Sir, – Robert Towers (Letters, September 9th) cogently makes the argument against a State honours system.
In my experience, the wish for recognition has never factored in the actions of those who contribute the most to our society.
They are driven by an innate goodness, which would be tainted by any attempt to categorise it by an honours list process.
We have enough inequality in our society, without adding another strand of distinction; and we have survived as a republic without it. – Yours, etc,
