Sir, – Frank McNally’s nostalgic reflections on his mother’s legacy (“In memory of my mother – Frank McNally on a painful epiphany”, An Irishman’s Diary, July 6th) resonated with me deeply. In the latter years of my career as a grammar school principal, when dealing with recalcitrant staff or parents, I learned to suppress my baser instincts and instead ask myself what my diplomatic and wise mother would have said. It invariably worked. – Yours, etc,
ENDA CULLEN,
Armagh.
