DUKAVU - Ethnic warfare intensified in eastern Zaire yesterday as the United Nations began efforts to contain conflict in the region. Aid workers said Banyamulenge Tutsi rebels fighting the Zairean army cut the highway between Bukavu and Uvira, leaving the road impassable.

Many people were reported to have been killed and wounded in renewed fighting in Uvira itself.
