Five youths are expected to appear at a sitting of Dun Laoghaire District Court this morning charged with assaulting five teenage German tourists last night. A Garda spokesman said the incident occurred on the East Pier at Dun Laoghaire shortly after 11 p.m. when money was demanded of the five Germans, four of whom were female. They are members of a church group which is due to travel to Achill, Co Mayo. today.

They declined to hand over anything and three were punched and kicked. Gardai later detained five males under the Criminal Justice Act. The spokesman said the tourists, who were staying locally, were not seriously hurt. They have been put in touch with the Tourist Victim Support Office.
