Ibadan - At least one protester was killed yesterday when Nigerian police opened fire to disperse a demonstration against the military ruler, Gen Sani Abacha, witnesses said.

They said the dead man, a 17-year-old mechanic, was shot through the chest as hundreds of people fled from police who also fired teargas to break up the march in the south-western opposition stronghold.

Opposition groups called the march to coincide with a demonstration by Gen Abacha's supporters to urge him to stand in elections he has decreed for August 1st.
