A teenager has been registered as a sex offender and been sentenced to two years, with the final 18 months suspended, for having sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17.
The young man said he “hadn’t got a clue” that it was against the law to have sex with someone her age.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to having sex with an underage person in September last year.
The court heard that the boy and girl had sexual intercourse in the bedroom of the apartment where his father lived. The girl, who was in State care at the time, had separated from two other girls who went back to their residence without her.
