LOS ANGELES – The world’s oldest person, a woman born in 1894 who had gained note when she voted for Barack Obama, died yesterday aged 115.

Gertrude Baines died in her sleep at the Western Convalescent Hospital in Los Angeles, where she had spent the last decade.

Ms Baines had only voted once previously, for John F Kennedy. She told the Los Angeles Times she supported Obama “because he’s for the coloured”. She kept a signed picture of him on her wall, the Times reported. – (Reuters)
