Mr Charlie Lennon, general secretary of the secondary teachers' union, ASTI, has been elected vice-president of Education International, the trade union body representing 23 million teachers around the world.

Mr Lennon said Education International had a particularly important role in promoting education in developing countries which "significantly enhances the quality of life for their citizens".
