BANDON IN Co Cork edged out Glenties in Co Donegal in a bid to set a world record for gathering the most people dressed as leprechauns in one place. Some 1,263 people were dressed in costume around South Main Street in Bandon on Saturday in a feat that is set to land the west Cork town in the Guinness World Records book.

Bandon attracted 163 more leprechauns than Glenties.

Both towns beat the previous world record set last year when Cowan House preparatory school in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, rounded up 414 leprechauns in a tribute to a retiring Irish teacher.

A further record was attempted in Ardara, Co Donegal, on Saturday – gathering the most St Patricks in one place. The town turned out 229 such saints and hopes that it will be recognised as a record by the Guinness book.

There is no similar record already in the book.
