Athens - Women have begun banging on the Byzantine portals of Greece's all-male monastic community of Mount Athos, challenging its centuries-old refusal to allow anything female into its grounds.

"I can go to Denmark without a passport but not to an area that is part of the Greek nation," said an Athens city councillor, Ms Fotini Pipili. "It is a sexist, anti-democratic decision taken by men, not God."
