Ms Janet Hughes, a regional secretary with SIPTU, has been appointed the State's first female Rights Commissioner, replacing Mr Des Casey, who is retiring from the position. The appointment was made by the Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms Harney.
