A woman is critically ill in hospital today after being rescued from Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh.

A passer-by saw the woman fall from the Wellington footbridge in Enniskillen and dived in to save her.

PSNI Inspector Mervyn Elliott hailed the rescuer as a life saver.

"There was a passer-by, a man, who witnessed her fall and he immediately took off his clothes and jumped into the river and rescued this lady," he said. "His actions were very brave, it was a very cold morning and the river is deep in that particular point."

The woman is being treated in the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen where her condition was said to be critical.
