A female prisoner remains in a critical condition in the Mater Hospital in Dublin following an apparent suicide attempt last night. She was found unconscious in her cell at Mountjoy women's prison with a length of bed linen wrapped around her neck at about 9.20 p.m. She had tried to strangle herself, prison authorities said.

She was being detained on remand at the prison's health centre on public order charges. She suffered from depression and was receiving medication, an Irish Prison Services, a spokesman said.
