A female trainee British police officer is seriously ill in hospital today after being shot as she and a colleague confronted a suspected burglar last night.
Police said the shooting occurred shortly before midnight when two officers, an experienced male officer and Rachael Bown (25), a probation officer, were called to a burglary in the Lenton area of Nottingham and tried to stop a man nearby.
PC Bown, who was wearing body armour, has undergone emergency surgery and is in intensive care in a serious condition.
There were no arrests.
The shooting comes just over two months after another female police officer was shot dead after she was called to an armed robbery at a travel agency in Bradford.
