Woman injured in Mayo shooting

A man has been arrested after a middle-aged woman was seriously injured in a shooting in Co Mayo this evening.

A man has been arrested after a middle-aged woman was seriously injured in a shooting in Co Mayo this evening.

The shooting happened in the village of Balla at approximately 6.30pm. Gardaí said the woman was shot by a lone gunman at a shop on Main St.

She was taken by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital.

A man aged in his 40s was later arrested and is currently detained at Castlebar Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

The scene has been preserved pending a full technical examination and a shotgun believed to have been used in the incident has been recovered.

Gardaí have called on any witnesses to contact the incident room at Castlebar Garda station.
