The Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission has launched an investigation after a pedestrian was hit by a Garda vehicle in Cork.

The Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission has launched an investigation after a pedestrian was hit by a Garda vehicle in Cork.

The 22-year-old woman was crossing Lavitt's Quay in Cork city when she was struck by a Garda van responding to an emergency.

The van was responding to a public order incident in Mahon when the collision happened around midnight. The woman, who is from Youghal in east Cork, is understood to have suffered serious leg injuries and a fractured skull.

She was taken to Cork University Hospital where her injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.

Gardaí cordoned off the area and notified the Garda Ombudsman.
