The Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission has opened an investigation after a woman was knocked down by an unmarked Garda car in Dublin.

A red 06-registered Toyota Corolla hit the woman at the pedestrian crossing on Dame Street, between Trinity Street and Anglesea Street, at about 8.30pm last night (Tuesday).

“The incident was referred to GSOC by the Garda Commissioner under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act 2005,” a statement said.

Under this legislation, the Garda Commissioner must refer to the Ombudsman Commission any matter that appears to him to indicate "that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of or serious harm to, a person".

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who may have information or who may be of assistance to the investigation, is asked to contact the GSOC at 1890 600 800.
