A 30-year-old woman questioned by gardai over an alleged assault on an eight-month-old baby boy in Co Cork in August was released without charge last night.

The woman was arrested yesterday morning in Wilton, Cork at 11.30am over the incident which happened in Carrigaline on August 15 thlast.

She was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act in Togher Garda Station in Cork city.

Last month a 30-year-old man was questioned about the alleged assault, but was also released without charge.

The baby has been in hospital since August, spending several weeks in intensive care and now his condition is said to be comfortable.

Gardai were first alerted to the incident by staff at Cork University Hospital who treated the boy.
