The family of an Irish woman who drowned while on holiday in Thailand have described how her friends tried in vain to save her.

The body of Linda Crossan (28), from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, was found washed up on a beach on the popular resort island of Ko Samui on Monday.

"While friends tried to save her, they could not rescue her," Ms Crossan's family said in a statement.

Ms Crossan worked as a nurse at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. She was a former pupil of Scoil Rois and Saint Louis Convent in Carrickmacross. Her family said she had visited Thailand before and had also travelled around India.

She is survived by her father Patsy and four brothers, Jonathan, Donal, Declan and Noel.

The family do not yet know when Ms Crossan's remains will be brought home for burial.
