A woman has made contact with gardaí in connection with the discovery of the body of a baby in Co Mayo last Sunday.

It's understood the woman is the mother of the dead infant, but gardaí have refused to confirm this.

A Garda spokeswoman said the woman spoke to gardaí yesterday and that "good progress has been made in attempts to establish her identity."

"Tests will have to be done to officially identify her as the mother of the child." the spokeswoman  added.

The baby boy was found by a number of young people last Sunday. The infant was buried in a black plastic bin liner which was protuding out of a shallow grave on the outskirts of Carrowtigue in North West Co Mayo.

A post-mortem examination showed the baby was carried full term, he weighed seven pounds, and his birth was unassisted.
