Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to an incident in Fermoy on early yesterday morning in which a man stabbed a garda before killing himself.

Trevor Clancy (26) of Pike Road, Fermoy, was refused entry to a nightclub on Abbey Street in the Co Cork town at around 1.30am. He was understood to have been carrying two knives at the time.

He stabbed a Garda sergeant who was among a group of officers called to the scene before killing himself at St James's Place a short time later.

The sergeant, who underwent surgery at Cork University Hospital yesterday, is expected to make a full recovery.

Gardaí would like to speak to anyone who may have had contact with Mr Clancy in the hours prior to his death.
