Gardai in Dublin have appealed for witnesses after a woman received serious head injuries when she was hit by a car this morning.

The incident happened under the footbridge on the busy stretch of road at Fairview, on the north side of the city shortly after 3am.

Gardai in Clontarf asked anyone that may have been in the area between 3am and 3.20am and who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have other information, to contact them.  A Garda spokesman said the Fairview incident was not a hit-and-run.

The road at Fairview has been closed this morning while gardai carry out a technical examination.

There are serious traffic delays in the surrounding area.

Separately, there were two accidents involving Luas trams in Dublin last night.

Five people were taken to hospital following a crash on the red line after a taxi collided with a tram near Smithfield at about 8.15pm.

Four people in the taxi and one passenger on the Luas were brought to hospital and four were later discharged.

A man sustained a serious leg injury shortly after midnight as he attempted to board a green line Luas tram in Ranelagh.
