Two long-standing Labour MEPs, Christine Crawley, who was first elected as MEP for Birmingham East in 1984 and John Tomlinson, also elected in 1984 for Birmingham West, have been appointed life peers. Mrs Crawley is a native of Wicklow. Both MEPs will be standing down at next year's elections.
