The West on Track community campaign has described as “disappointing but not surprising” the McCarthy report recommendation to drop the western rail corridor from the public transport programme, writes Lorna Siggins.

Dr Colm McCarthy had gone “outside of his remit” in making the recommendation, the campaign said in a statement yesterday.

He had criticised the project on RTÉ Radio last year, the campaign said. It added: “How can such a person be considered a neutral or credible commentator on anything west of the Shannon?”
