CARDIFF - Leading clergy from the Anglican, Methodist, Congregationalist and other Protestant churches publicly backed a Welsh Assembly, claiming it would best serve the social needs of Wales into the next century.

But the Roman Catholic Church in Wales has so far not made its position known.
