A pub owner in Waterford city was fined in court today for breaches of the smoking ban on his premises.

Customers were permitted to smoke during a lock-in at Mullane's Bar, Newgate Street, Waterford on July 1st last.

But among the group enjoying the live music in the pub were two undercover environmental health officers who witnessed ashtrays on the tables and people smoking openly.

At Waterford District Court today, licencee Robert Cunningham of was charged with a breach of the smoking ban and fined €100. He was also ordered to pay €1,500 expenses.

He was given two months to pay or face a month's prison sentence.
