An estimated 4,000 people marched in Waterford today to protest against the lack of radiotherapy units in the Southeast.

A spokesman for the Waterford Council of Trade Unions, which organised the protest, said there was a urgent need for proper radiotherapy facilities unit in the southeast and the march was about highlighting a situation that had existed over the past three or four years.

The most recently published Government strategy on radiotherapy services indicates that Waterford Regional hospital will not be getting a radiotherapy unit.

A number of organisations, including the South East Cancer Foundation, called on people to support this afternoon's march.
