Surgical and other hospital waste, including used surgical equipment, syringes and swabs, was spilled onto the quays in Dublin early yesterday morning, after vandals set fire to a parked truck container.

Gardai cordoned off the area around Hanover Quay while the site was investigated. A medical inspector from the Health and Safety Authority gave the all-clear last night to begin cleaning up the area.
