Ireland's good record on hygiene has enabled it to avoid large outbreaks of food-borne diseases such as E coli 0157, according to Dr Fergus Hill, who retired recently as public analyst for Dublin and chairman of the Food Safety Advisory Board.

Speaking after he was awarded an honorary fellowship by the Institute of Food Science and Technology of Ireland, Dr Hill warned that those bugs would present major challenges in the future.
