London - The first British soldier to be shot for desertion in the first World War has been rehabilitated 86 years later by the residents of his village. In a referendum organised by the village vicar, Shoreham residents voted that the name of Pte Thomas Highgate should be included on the town's war monument.
Pte Highgate was shot at dawn just days after surviving the Battle of Mons in 1914. He became separated from his battalion following the battle.
