Gardai in Galway say an incident in which a petrol bomb was hurled at a car was the work of a vigilante group that was sending out a "marker" to a convicted murderer.

Local people in the Claddagh area said the incident occurred on Wednesday night when a man who murdered a local woman in the early 1980s was on day release from prison.
